Just a reminder that this is the last weekend to sign up for [ profile] hp_holidaygen. Sign-ups close midnight PST on Sunday.

We have about 15 people signed up at the moment, with a mix of interests so we should have a good selection of fic to enjoy in December. A few more participants would be most welcome!

Clicking on the banner will take you to the sign-up post:

And much to my surprise, in the process of making the banner I seem to have drawn fanart! Not that I'd compare my wee elf to the stunning creations of our talented artists, but we all have to start somewhere, and to be honest I've seen worse.

I've never felt confident in being able to draw, though it's something I've always wanted to do, to share images that are in my head. I was very aware when doing the Sectus decor that the plans were all in my head and that if I went under a bus it would be difficult for someone else to put all the pieces together (of the decor, that is, not of under-bus me) - had I had a modicum of confidence in drawing I could have at least given others an idea of what I was aiming for. Designing for stained glass has given me a bit more confidence to have a go; when I couldn't find a suitable dragon outline recently for my library toddlers to stick things on I drew my own, which I'd never have done a few months ago.

The elf came from musing on possible Christmas-themed stained glass designs. I'd also wanted to develop some HP-related icons for [ profile] hp_holidaygen, and the two were an obvious fit. I was thinking of asking someone else to turn the preliminary glass design into an icon, but then I figured I might as well have a go myself - being hopeful that I could come up with something that would look reasonable at least when reduced to icon size.

The advantage of drawing over stained glass design is a much greater freedom in where the lines can go - with glass I need to make sure not only that all the cuts are possible but also that the structure of the finished piece is sound. The disadvantage is that it's harder to get away with the abstract - in glass I just need to suggest feet; here I needed to try to get to grips with foreshortening.

This was a pencil drawing, coloured with watercolour pencils, which I really enjoy working with - they combine the best of both pencil and paint. For a beginning drawing, I was quite pleased by the way it came out. Suggestions for improvement would be welcomed!
