So, this time last week I was happily stroking my new copy of HBP, and this time next week I'll hopefully be happily chatting to a couple of you over a beer at Reading uni.

And the panic sets in. I booked my bus ticket yesterday (11-12 hours each way to Little Whinging for about £40 - that's going to be fun, especially the 7:40 departure time next Thursday), and now I'm coming face to face with the fact that I have nothing to wear! Not that I feel any pressure to be in costume, but I know that once I get there I'll have a much better time if I am.

So I ventured into one of the local fabric shops this afternoon - oh, and it was fun. Not since I was involved in the fetish scene could I look at all the lovely materials and dream about mad costumes that I'd actually have a chance to wear. And this is even better, as even (especially) the bright shiny fabrics could come into play.

But... choices, choices. I've had the image in my mind for a while now of a long green robe, which should set off my snake-brooch beautifully, but I'm not a Slytherin and green isn't my best colour. Thankfully the season gave me the excuse to slap myself on the wrist when I started fingering the green silk velvet (my credit card is overloaded as it is). Lucky the conference wasn't in winter but hopefully the next one will be - I want velvet robes!. And just inside the door there was a roll of fabric in exactly the shade I'd envisaged, at £2/m. And when I asked for 4m (don't you just love standing in fabric shops guestimating patterns in your head?) there was exactly 4m on the roll. Twas meant to be...

Trouble is, it's not the most exciting material. I was drooling over some of the two-tone stuff... and after all, we will need dress robes for the feast, right?

I'll see how I get on with this one over the weekend. As if I haven't got enough to do with packing up my flat, sorting out legal stuff, making up curtains, choosing a new carpet and sanding my toilet seat (every time I sit the thing on my lap I think of Fred and George).

And... does anyone know how to make a witchy hat?
