Hippogriffs in Edinburgh
Aug. 15th, 2008 08:09 pmIf you fancy meeting the guy who illustrated the UK covers of CoS and PoA, head along to 18 Chester Street (near St Mary's Cathedral on Palmerston Place) over the next week. He's exhibiting there with some other artists from the Brighton area, including a cityscape artist who's done a gorgeous picture of a Hippogriff perching above the city (sadly I don't quite have £900 of spare cash, particularly when I don't have a steady home to give to a painting) and a stained glass artist. Both of the latter used to be book illustrators, so it's a good place to head for anyone interested in that industry.
Had an interesting chat with Cliff, which I won't go into here except to say that I'd not really thought about the illustrators before. Nor had I realised that there were 4 of them: the first to do PS, the second to do CoS and PoA, the third to do GoF and the last to do the last three. Perhaps the multiplicity explains why the illustrators here are less household names than the US one. Apparently the later two had to give up their copyright in order to get the contract (illustrators can normally retain copyright, it seems). Which is rather ironic, given how fiercely the publishers guard their own.
Also at the exhibition is a selection of HP memorabilia, including a Time Turner used in the PoA movie and a set of character busts. I'd seen pictures of the busts before, but it was interesting to see them in the flesh (or plastic, or whatever they use). The Lucius-as-Death-Eater one is actually better than I'd thought. Whether it's good enough to want to get hold of it... how collectormanic do I really want to get?
Here's the details on the exhibition from Cliff's website:

Please spread the word about this - everyone I spoke to there was really nice and they'd love to have more visitors!
