I'm gathering nominations and votes for good Harry Potter genfic on this post. Nominated fics that receive four supporting votes are added to the hpgenfic list. This hopefully gives the list more variety than a single person's rec list, while also ensuring quality. There's some information about how to search the list here.
Of course, this list is not definitive - there are many good genfics that aren't listed. If you want to nominate one, please do so in a comment to this post.
This post was inspired by - and is complementary to -
dreaminoflorien's two posts for reccing shipfic.
ani_bester maintains a HP Genart recs page. Go here to nominate or vote for Gen fanart.
xntrick has a list of the genfics that were nominated on
dreaminoflorien's list before it became clear that that list was only for shipfic. Not all of them have been re-nominated here - please feel free to do so. If you do, leave a comment on
xntrick's post to let us know.
HOW TO REC A FIC
1) Before posting a rec, please make sure that no one else has already suggested it. There is a list of fics that have been nominated here. I've stated the last nomination to be added at the top of the list, along with its page number on this post - please go to that page and check that the fic you want to rec hasn't been added.
If I notice a duplicate I will delete or freeze the second rec and ask its author to vote on the first thread. If I don't notice it, you risk splitting the vote for that fic.
2) To recommend a fic, please use this template:
Title:
Rating:
Length:
Main character(s):
Author:
Era:
Genre/theme (optional):
Summary:
LINK:
Notes:
Length: Choose oneshot or chaptered
Rating: Please use G/PG/PG-13/R/NC-17 format - it makes it easier to categorise the fics so that they can be searched by rating.
Main characters: Please, don't list *all* characters in a fic. Stick to the PoV character and/or those who are focussed on most - think 'if I was looking for fics because I wanted to read about this character, would I be satisfied by the amount of attention given to that character in this fic?' Ideally not more than four unless it's an ensemble piece.
Era: Please choose from those below. More than one era is allowed, and it would help if you specify rather than saying 'multiple'. Otherwise I have to make the judgement, and if you know the fic well enough to rec it, chances are you'll be able to make a better judgement than I can.
3) Please, only one rec per comment - otherwise it's really hard to see which is being voted on.
4) To support a recommendation, reply to the comment for that fic with 'Seconded'/'I agree' etc. If you do not have a LiveJournal and have to comment anonymously, please give some indication of your fandom identity.
5) Recs that receive FOUR comments (making five votes in total) will be added to the masterlist; please don't add to the comments if there are already four for that rec. (But if there appear to be four and the thread isn't frozen, do check that one of the existing comments isn't a query rather than a vote!)
6) If you give a rec its fourth - qualifying - supporting vote, please make a comment here so that I know to add it to the list.
7) Genfic includes all fic in which the ship is not the main focus. I don't want to exclude fics that include a sex scene if it is short relative to the length of the fic, and the theme of the fic is, say, individual character development rather than the development of a sexual relationship. Friendship fic is fine. Porn is not. :)
8) If someone recs a fic that you feel is too shippy to count as gen, feel free to comment and say so.
9) Please don't rec or vote on your own fics! It's okay to vote on (or propose) fics you've beta-read, but use your judgement here. The idea of this list is to get a list of fics that are widely thought to be good - if you feel you are too close to the fic to recommend it without bias, I suggest you wait for someone else to do so.
