Does anyone have any theories about the long delay between the DVD release in the UK and the US? Seems an odd move to me.

Still, I'm not complaining about being on the early shift, though I have mixed feelings about the extra features themselves.

There's a lot more behind-the-scenes stuff than I remember from previous disks - nowhere near as much as I'd like, and still a translucent imitation of the LotR extras, but definitely an improvement on the poor fare we've been used to.

'Tonks' was bl**dy irritating in 'Trailing Tonks' but it was really interesting to see the 'Trail', i.e. behind the scenes at the studio, even including the canteen (which I've never seen featured in DVD extras before). The credits, and the wheel-tracks on the studio version of the Marauders' map were kind of amusing, but it was the lesson on spell-casting moves (or, as Jason Isaacs referred to it in one of the other features, 'wandage') that I'll be going back to.

I'd have loved to have more detail about the props and artwork, but I felt the feature on editing was a good introduction to the subject for a youngish audience.

Then there's The Hidden Secrets of Harry Potter, which used movie footage and interviews to explore the themes in the books. Nothing new here for fans, and it was obviously recorded pre-DH so that much of the speculation and questions is already redundant. Still, it was good to see Steve Vander Ark finally get some recognition (the good kind) from WB, and I can't complain about a Jason Isaacs voiceover, even if it did sound as if he was auditioning to be the next movietrailervoice. Pity they didn't let him write it as well as narrate. Having seen his video diary on Peter Pan, I'll keep my fingers crossed that he gets to do something similar on DH.

And speaking of Jason... I was really disappointed that there are no Lucius missing scenes, though on the plus side at least that means his scenes got into the movie proper. But I was expecting to see more of Bellatrix and Harry, and Lucius sitting by his fire with two dogs, which I'd assumed was a picture planned for the Daily Prophet. I suppose the Daily Prophets were heavy on special effects so they decided exactly what they were going to show before rendering the effects and the Lucius shot was cut by then. Or perhaps it was supposed to be a publicity still (in which case it would have been nice of WB to publish it.)

I would have also liked to see a stills gallery with artwork and costume details, like the one they had in CoS.

There was one bright spot amid the lack of new Lucius material - during The Hidden Secrets of Harry Potter feature they did show the picture of Lucius at home - essentially the same picture that [livejournal.com profile] _lady_narcissa_ posted a few months back, but with more showing round the edges. Here's a screencap:

Ah, Lucius, enjoy your comforts while you can...

I love the swirly coat with the high buttoned collar (though I still don't approve of his Muggle trousers), but what really caught my eye was the picture on the wall behind, which was more cut off on the earlier photo. If that's supposed to be Malfoy Manor, it bears rather too much resemblance to Hardwick Hall for my liking. Yes, yes, I suppose the Elizabethan-era Malfoys could have torn down the old house and built a more impressive one - after all, Waddeston is called a Manor, though I've no idea why.

But really, that's not a Manor. This is a Manor (and a Wiltshire one to boot):
