So, finally the infamous Twilight is in cinemas on this side of the pond, though - given the size of the audience, which just about broke into double figures - the teenage girls of this corner of West Yorkshire have escaped Edward's influence.
Please don't defriend me over this, but I actually enjoyed it.
The low expectations helped, of course. I figured it would be a suspend-disbelief-all-ye-who-enter-here teen popcorn movie, so the teen themes didn't bother me. But for me, the direction lifted it above that: I felt the camerawork and the composition of the shots emphasised the obsessional feel of it, adding added an appropriate creepyness that would have been absent in a more straight sunlit film. And while I wouldn't endorse it as a place for teenage girls to look for role models, I could empathise somewhat with the nature of Bella and Edward's relationship - yes, the stalker aspect of it could be disturbing, but all it does it charactature the obsessional nature of that kind of 'love'. I like the way the movie didn't try to make out that it was some great spiritual bond but had Edward state that her attraction to him was due to his being 'designed' to lure in prey.
But, having read
stoney321's entries on the books, it was hard in places not to be aware (and a tad freaked out by) the Mormon ideology in the film. If you've not yet seen her hilarious and disturbingly insightful 4-part commentary, LDS Sparkledammerung, I highly recommend it whether you've read/seen Twilight or not.
And while looking for that link again, I came across this review, including the sex scene that never was... :)
