Uh oh. I was innocently wandering around the Co-op this lunchtime, and there they were: a veritable wall of Cadbury’s Christmas selection packs.
I just don’t get it. I mean, who buys Christmas selection packs in September? When was the last time you heard someone say, “Why can’t we can buy Christmas food/decorations/cards/etc earlier in the year?”
Don’t get me wrong. I like Christmas. Oh, I’m not keen on the commercialism or the guilt-tripping articles on the average amount people spend on each other (funny how those articles never seem to mention said person’s credit card bill), but I do like the fact that, for once, almost every office worker is on holiday at the same time, that I can have more than two consecutive days at home, that there’s time to spend with friends. And anything that prompts my employers to buy me a good meal is fine by me.
But… not in September. September is a time for new community classes, for fading light, for blowing leaves and bright stars and crisp clear walks in the countryside. Not for thinking about a midwinter festival of light. I used to love Autumn term when I was younger – a fresh new crop of classes after the summer break (okay, I liked school, I’m strange like that. It was a whole lot better than work though, pay rate excepted), then half-term - a week away with walks and cream teas and warm fires in one of the more beautiful parts of England, if we were lucky - then Hallowe’en, then Guy Fawkes Night, and then Advent, and finally that magic of Christmastime. I do remember Hallowe’en displays being Transfigured into Christmas ones with remarkable speed, but at least they seemed to be able to let us concentrate on one festival at a time. I want to enjoy Christmas when it comes, when the year is dark and about to start getting lighter. I don’t want to be jaded by it before we even get to December 1st.
This is September, not even the 25th September. That’s over three months before Christmas. That’s over 25% of the year. Even if they waited until after Hallowe’en, that would still give them almost 15% of the year. Remember that song ‘I wish it could be Christmas every day’? Just give it time…
Bah, humbug. ;-)
(In the spirit of seasonality, Chthonia will refrain from further rants on the subject until a more appropriate time of year. Or until she sees the first Christmas tree of the year, which will probably be next week, the way things are going...)
