I am working on that post about my trip, but...

Had another trawl through my flist and couldn't resist this (from [livejournal.com profile] rachel_w, I think):

Which Sue Are You Quiz by Razzberry

And, just to make this not-another-load-of-meme (speaking of memes, I saw someone in a cafe the other day with a T-shirt that read Memes don't exist... tell your friends :))
Hem. Yes. What was I saying about procrastination? It's not as if my mind didn't have a tendancy to wander before the bl**dy depression.

Anyhow. I saw a post on someone LJ urging us to vote in JKR's latest FAQ poll. I'd already had a look and decided not to vote; we'll know the answers to the first two questions soon enough, and we already know the answer to the third. But I went back and voted for the third anyhow, partly because I don't want her to answer the first two (I don't want to know until I read it in the book, for goodness sake!) and partly because she might give more detail than she's otherwise planning to give in the book.

I've seen a number of people saying that they wished JKR wouldn't shoot down theories, and I kind of agree. I love the fact she's interacting with fans more now than she was a couple of years ago, but it seems to take the intensity off the speculation somewhat. (Though perhaps I'm just less excited about this book because of my general mood at the moment.)

I think I can understand, though - for her, watching the speculation must be both exciting and frustrating; to know the answers but having to be cautious about how much she joins in. Or perhaps she thinks we really want to know the answers to those questions? She expressed surprise that no-one had asked her how Voldemort had survived (IIRC) but as someone pointed out, most of us probably assumed that was so key to the plot that she wouldn't answer it anyhow. And again, I don't want to know. The speculation is fun in itself, and although in some ways it would be satisfying to have guessed right, there are so many people discussing it that if someone comes up with the right answer we'll all get to hear the theory. I'd be disappointed to read the last book and think 'oh, so it was that theory, then'. I want her to surprise us - and she has a better chance of doing so if she stops closing off the false alleys.

Perhaps it's part of her game, giving us subtle clues about where it's going by not shooting down certain theories.

Or perhaps she is more and more aware of fanfic, and is starting to feel proprietory about the characters, and doesn't like the idea of them being twisted OOC because of a) wishful thinking and b) inadequate information on the part of fanfic authors? That might explain her continually expressed dislike of Draco.

Either way, I really wish she'd indulge her desire to participate in the fandom by giving us background information on the Potterverse - I'd love to know more about wizarding politics, or economics, or religion, or history - providing it wouldn't spoil Book 6 or 7. And that information would be much more useful to fanfic writers than knowing that Luna/Neville isn't going to happen. I guess that's a fanficcer's bias, though - I'm more interested in immersing myself in her world or the communiy of the fandom than speculating on future plotlines. I want to know, of course, but I'm happy to wait to read them in the books.
