I'd seen the anvils dropping, so R/Hr in HBP was something less than a surprise to me. What I'd never given much thought to is what they could see in each other.
And then I realised: Molly nags. Hermione nags. Molly respects rules, but works against authority when she thinks it wrong (i.e. the Ministry in OotP). So does Hermione. Even their much vaunted different career aspirations aren't that far apart - Hermione's priority is not to seek fame or even knowledge, but to do something 'worthwhile'. For her that means working for social change, for Molly it means bringing up a large family.
Now, I'm not saying that Ron is wandering around thinking 'Gosh, Hermione is just like my Mum, I must marry her', but it's commonly observed that people tend to seek partners who are similar to a (opposite-gendered) parent. But I can see Ron finding Hermione a comfortable, familiar sort of presence. And their bickering certainly mirrors Arthur and Molly's.
I'm not so sure about what Hermione sees in Ron, though - and I'm not saying that to diss Ron; he has plenty of good qualities, I'm just not sure what in particular would be appealing to someone like Hermione. (I suppose this must have been debated to death in shipping circles, but as my main interest is in what motivates characters to do as they canonically do rather than in trying to predict what they will do, I feel justified in coming to the question at such a late stage. :)
Could this be a clue to the characters of Hermione's parents? Actually, I've had a fic about the Grangers bubbling away in the back of my head for a couple of years, in which Hermione's Dad does have Ron's mixture of being both easy-going and slightly conservative. Hmmm.
